Draw New Zealand Birds was my first non-fiction book for both children and adults.
This was an opportunity for me to share techniques, using pencil, pencil & gesso, and coloured pencil. Art mediums which I enjoy using. With all my drawings, I layer the colour and tone and make sure there are a range of tonal value, (white, black and greys in between). I pay attention to the focal area, the point of interest in the drawing, generally this is the eye.
Draw New Zealand Birds is judged one of the top ten children's non-fiction books by Storylines - Notable Books Award in 2008.
Draw New Zealand Birds won the 2008 LIANZA Ellsie Lockie award for children's non-fiction.
